This week, we finally come to the passage that drew us to this letter in the first place, the often quoted phrase, "God Is Love". As we enter the Advent Season, we begin our preparation for, and anticipation of, the promise of God born in the world, in our lives. This passage is full of tension, hope, questions and inspiration for our journey.

This week we'll push into the fourth chapter of the letter, and one of the most significant themes of the Christian faith. Typically referred to as incarnation, we'll explore the integration of spirit and matter, the goodness of this life and universe. Then we'll ask questions about how we discern the many forces that push and pull us in life.

This week our letter carries us into the territory of transition, so relevant in todays culture; from religion to spirituality, from belief system to practice, from institutions to deeper loyalties. We'll ask fun questions about what we know and how, as well as how our methods supersede our facts.

This week, pending survival in the "after-math-ew", we'll move forward with one of the most challenging but hopeful passages in this letter. In a text overwhelmingly occupied with love, we find the first instance of "do not love". We'll explore what we should make of this, and how this warning might truly lead to life.

We said last week, love is the point and goal of our faith, tradition, and community, but it begins in you, and begs some reflection about what is going on in you. Why does it seem to be an uphill battle to live it? The letter carries us further into what this looks like and what it doesn't.
